A Mexican Town Is Giving Americans Something Donald Trump Can’t: Affordable Dental Care
Trump’s anti-Mexican rhetoric doesn’t worry the 600 dentists in Los Algodones or the US “dental refugees” they treat, many of whom voted for Trump. “We’re helping the United States take care of the people they are not able to.”
Yeah, this shit is fractally annoying.
All the Olds who move down here at retirement do this.
They have put off dental care all their lives.  So they go to Mexico and get their entire mouths renovated.  And introduce lots of bacteria into their bloodstreams.   And then a few months later they have heart attacks and Medicare pays for a shitload of stents and a decade or two of follow up cardiac care.

I have been contemplating suicide since 1977.
Not constantly, but you know, every time I got really sick.   Which sometimes lasted long stretches.

I have always had a plan.   How I was going to do it.
When I was young, it was drugs.  Overdosing.
When I was in Seattle, it was CO2.   Die in my garage.  Or jump off one of the many bridges.

When I moved here to Arizona I realized I could eat a bunch of Jack in the Box tacos and pass out in my car on a hot day.   Sleep to death.

The brain starts to eat itself after chronic sleep deprivation

Sleep loss in mice sends the brain’s immune cells into overdrive. This might be helpful in the short term, but could increase the risk of dementia in the long run
One type of glial cell, called an astrocyte, prunes unnecessary synapses in the brain to remodel its wiring. Another type, called a microglial cell, prowls the brain for damaged cells and debris.
Bellisi’s team found that after an undisturbed sleep, astrocytes appeared to be active in around 6 per cent of the synapses in the brains of the well-rested mice. But astrocytes seemed to be more active in sleep-deprived mice – those that had lost eight hours of sleep showed astrocyte activity in around 8 per cent of their synapses, while the cells were active in 13.5 per cent of the synapses of the chronically sleep-deprived animals.
This suggests that sleep loss can trigger astrocytes to start breaking down more of the brain’s connections and their debris. “We show for the first time that portions of synapses are literally eaten by astrocytes because of sleep loss,” says Bellesi.

Century-old drug as potential new approach to autism

In a small, randomized Phase I/II clinical trial (SAT1), researchers say a 100-year-old drug called suramin, originally developed to treat African sleeping sickness, was safely administered to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who subsequently displayed measurable, but transient, improvement in core symptoms of autism.

Naviaux, who is co-director of the Mitochondrial and Metabolic Disease Center at UC San Diego, believes that ASD -- and several other chronic conditions, including chronic fatigue syndrome and some autoimmune disorders -- are caused by metabolic dysfunction or impaired communication between cells in the brain, gut and immune system.

Specifically, this dysfunction is caused by abnormal persistence of the cell danger response (CDR), a natural and universal cellular reaction to injury or stress. "The purpose of CDR is to help protect the cell and jump-start the healing process," said Naviaux, by essentially causing the cell to harden its membranes, cease interaction with neighbors and withdraw within itself until the danger has passed.

"But sometimes CDR gets stuck," Naviaux said. "This prevents completion of the natural healing cycle and can permanently alter the way the cell responds to the world. When this happens, cells behave as if they are still injured or in imminent danger, even though the original cause of the injury or threat has passed."

At the molecular level, cellular homeostasis or equilibrium is altered, creating an abnormal cellular response that leads to chronic disease. "When this happens during early child development," said Naviaux, "it causes autism and many other chronic childhood disorders."

Trump and Congressional Republicans have repeatedly said that the ACA is collapsing under its own weight, and that the exchanges are exploding. But while there is reason to be concerned about problems in the individual market, the story of Obamacare’s problems is not complete unless we take a look back over the last several years and look at all the ways Republican lawmakers, governors, and pundits – and now the Trump Administration – took steps to deliberately weaken the Affordable Care Act.

And now...
Trump reportedly wants to kill critical Obamacare subsidies, despite warnings health insurance premiums would spike

Speaking of the Redneck

Mmmmm.   I told you not to piss off the librarians...
We have a long history of being ordered about by smug white men.
We really like the black lady.

House Votes to Limit Powers of First Black Librarian of Congress

In a vote of 378 to 48, the House passed legislation to take power away from the current Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden.
The legislation, H.R. 1695, was authored by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (D-Va.) and ranking member John Conyers (D-Mich.), would limit the powers of the librarian. It is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law by President Trump.
The bill makes the head of the Copyright Office, the Register of Copyrights, a presidential appointment that would have to be confirmed by the Senate, rather than an appointment by the Librarian of Congress, as it has been since 1870. The bill also limits the position of Librarian of Congress to a ten-year term.
The previous Librarian of Congress, James Billington, served in the position for 28 years.
President Barack Obama appointed Hayden the 14th Librarian of Congress on February 24, 2016. She is the first African American to hold the position, as well as the first woman to be the Librarian of Congress, in the agency’s history. On March 23, legislation was introduced to block Hayden from appointing the next Register of Copyrights. That legislation passed the House on April 26.
Supporters of the bill argued that the legislation would help to modernize the Copyright Office and make it more accountable to Congress. Attempts to contact the office of Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) for details on why he authored H.R. 1695, were not answered.
“This bill serves no purpose other than to take power away from the Librarian of Congress and give it to powerful lobbyists, who will have a major say in who runs the Copyright Office,” wrote Michael Masnick on on April 26. “It’s a bad bill, and it’s a gift to Hollywood.”
The entertainment industry pushed hard for the passage of H.R. 1695. It’s likely that the selection of the Librarian of Congress will be the focus of attention of the power of the entertainment lobby moving forward now that senators will play a role in confirmation.

No, this is a ginormous gift to Rupert.   Kisses darling!

The painful truth about teeth
You can work full time but not have the money to fix your teeth – visible reminders of the divide between rich and poor.

But the absolutely gobsmacking truths about teeth are:
  1. If they are bad, the nerves are dead and there usually isn't any pain.   So you ignore them until you are septic.
  2. Too Much invasive dental treatment does just about as much damage to the immune system and brain as complete neglect.  It directly introduces oral microbes into the bloodstream.
Ultimately, this is the fundamental problem in medicine:  Separation of Dental and Body protocols.

Some Good News

Can Cannabis Combat Age-Related Cognitive Decline?
The long-term administration of low-doses of the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, ameliorates age-related learning and memory deficits in mice, researchers have observed.
On the basis of this observation, the investigators plan to conduct a clinical trial to determine whether the finding applies to elderly individuals with and those without cognitive impairment, Andras Bilkei-Gorzo, PhD, of the Institute of Molecular Psychiatry, the University of Bonn, Germany, told Medscape Medical News.
Dr Bilkei-Gorzo and colleagues examined the effects of long-term, low-dose THC administration in young (2 months old), mature (12 months old), and old (18 months old) mice.
They found that THC treatment was associated with impaired behavioral performance on learning and memory tasks in young mice, but was associated with improved learning and memory in mature and old mice.
"THC treatment has practically the opposite effect in young and old animals," Dr Bilkei-Gorzo told Medscape Medical News.
"The same treatment rejuvenated old brains, whereas it made the young brains old. The reason of this phenomenon is that the activity of cannabinoid system declines in aging. In old animals, THC treatment restored the failing cannabinoid system activity, whereas it overactivated the normally functioning cannabinoid system in young animals," the researchers write.
Sounds like my kind of research...

Bob Owens, editor of the popular pro-gun blog, died Monday in an apparent suicide, authorities say.
Owens was found around 11 a.m. near a stop sign outside his subdivision in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., a town southwest of Raleigh. A gun was located nearby, according to the Fuquay-Varina Police Department.
An autopsy to determine the cause of death is still pending, but police said the gunshot wound was “possibly … self-inflicted.”
Shortly before Owens’s death, he apparently wrote a chilling message on Facebook: “In the end, it turns out that I’m not strong. I’m a coward, and selfish son of a b‑‑‑‑. I’m sorry.”

Seemingly innocuous virus can trigger celiac disease
The current study, a collaboration with Terence Dermody, MD, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and physician-in-chief and scientific director at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, shows that intestinal viruses can induce the immune system to overreact to gluten and trigger the development of celiac disease. Using two different reovirus strains, the researchers showed how genetic differences between viruses can change how they interact with the immune system. Both reovirus strains induced protective immunity and did not cause overt disease. However, when given to mice, one common human reovirus triggered an inflammatory immune response and the loss of oral tolerance to gluten, while another closely related but genetically different strain did not.

I saw this picture on the internet yesterday and can't stop thinking about it.
This is not a sweetly sleeping baby.     This baby is in the middle of a narcoleptic sleep attack.
He has infected and swollen adenoids. He can't breathe through his nose.
And his tear ducts are clogged. That's why his eyelids and brows are swollen.
That hand under his face is to hold his mouth open and soothe the the pain in his cheeks.

He's oxygen deprived and mouth breathing because he's been laid down flat.
The resulting orexin deficiency has made his muscles slack and locked him in sleep.
Look at the furrowed brow, he's trying to move but can't.

He's already insulin resistant.   Chubby, smooth and pink...
I'm guessing somebody just fed him some cereal.

In the meantime-
Some medical science:

When Evidence Says No, but Doctors Say Yes
Long after research contradicts common medical practices, patients continue to demand them and physicians continue to deliver. The result is an epidemic of unnecessary and unhelpful treatments.

Autism risk linked to herpes infection during pregnancy

The Mirror

This is my all time favorite picture.
It's from Hurricane Katrina. I think it was a cover on a Psych magazine, but I can't find it online anymore.
Anyhow, I hope the photographer takes pride in how very perfect it is.

The Emperor's New Wall

Damn I hate living in this mirror.

Homeland Security chief: Parts of border wall will be transparent
“Kelly said the wall will take a multi-layered approach,” Fox News reporter Catherine Herridge said. “There will be the physical wall and then parts of the wall that you can actually see through because it will rely on sensors and other technology.”

1. That's not a "big beautiful wall".   Walls are things  Words Matter.
2. And we already have surveillance towers and sensors.    Down the road from me...

1.  Yes it is as much of a Muslim Ban as you though you might get away with.
2.  Obama already increased vetting on those exact countries.   And didn't make a fuss or fuck it up.

And so it goes

Trump Basically Just Admitted He’s Ditching His Promise to Renegotiate Prescription Drug Prices

I'm guessing it went something more like this:
45 screamed at them and told them to bring down prices.
They pulled out a paper copy of Patents for Dummies and handed it to one of his aides.
Then they laughed, gave him the finger, and walked out of the room.

Believe your Eyes

Bannon is much sicker than the Predator in Chief.  His glucose metabolism is clearly shot from a lifetime of alcohol abuse.   His nerves are so dead his face is practically falling off his skull,  You can see the damage to his nose from across a very large room.  And that bright red cheekbone is a septic upper tooth infection.  There is no portion of his nervous system that isn't toxic.

And he's a nazi collaborator.
And admires Satan.
And wants to burn the whole thing down.

In case you missed it-  He wrote most of  the Executive Orders Donny signed this week.

Update Two Days Later:
Steve Bannon is now on the National Security Council Principals Committee, equal status to the Secretaries of State and Defense.

The Double Edged Sword

If you are infected and don't get much sleep, you will become manic and hypoglycemic and PRODUCE MORE BETA-AMYLOID IN YOUR BRAIN.

Hyperactive Cognitive Impairment.
It's the first stage of Alzheimer's.

All of his facial sinuses are inflamed now.   He needs a good cry.

I got this slightly wrong (ha)-
but the underlying truth is still valid.  He can't handle rejection.
And he's a very sick man.

Trump Nervous Breakdown Watch Starts Now
It is becoming pretty clear that He is not going to win the election.
And it is also pretty obvious that he is acutely infected and septic.

He has planned for a year to be successful on Nov 8.    His brain has set that deadline.   It knows exactly when the reward is due.
He has been riding and enduring the manic symptoms in anticipation of that moment.   His body thinks it's going to be able to rest then.   It's been quietly enduring the accumulating damage until things get better.
Unfortunately for him, that is not going to happen.   Trump TV probably won't even happen.  He apparently doesn't have enough money to subsidize it.
His world will be worse than when he started- he now has all kinds of fires to put out in his businesses and personal life, and his metabolism will just not continue.
It will just shut down and try to recover whether he wants to or not.

It might be something drastic like a heart attack or stroke, but major depression and suicidal tendencies are more likely.
This will be reported as "Hospitalized for Exhaustion".    Think "Wailing on the Floor".

Charles Pierce Speaks for Me

If You Think Chelsea Manning Got Off Easy, You're Out of Your Mind
At the end of his term, President George W. Bush commuted the sentence of Scooter Libby, who had been convicted of misleading Congress as to the outing (purely out of political vengeance) of a covert CIA operative named Valerie Plame. At the end of his term, President George H.W. Bush pardoned everyone convicted of engaging in the criminal act of selling missiles to a state-sponsor of terrorism and diverting the profits to a private war in Central America. Libby never served a day in jail. Neither did any of the Iran-Contra characters who skated.
In 2013, Chelsea Manning was convicted of the massive leak of government documents that she orchestrated in 2009. On Tuesday, the president commuted most of the rest of Manning's sentence, and she will be released next May, instead of in 2045. Since her conviction, she has been incarcerated at Leavenworth, including long stretches of solitary confinement. She has attempted suicide twice. If you think she got off easy, you're out of your mind.

Number One

This is now my Very Favorite Article.

Vikings, Worms, and Emphysema
The woeful state of Viking bathrooms could be a factor behind smokers’ coughs in Scandinavia. Sometimes in human evolution, populations adapt in ways that aren’t always beneficial in the long run. For example, the sickle-cell trait evolved in humans because it provides some protection against malaria, but people who inherit the trait from both parents develop sickle-cell disease, a serious blood disorder. In this new case, molecular biologists have connected intestinal parasites in the Viking Age to modern lung disease.
Last year, Danish scientists studying the remains of a Viking privy found that the ancient Norse and their domestic animals were infested with a variety of intestinal parasites. These parasites release enzymes called proteases that cause disease. The immune system also creates proteases that can cause inflammation and damage, but the body has natural defenses against those, including a molecule called alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT). Because they were more or less constantly infected, Vikings evolved to produce “deviant” forms of A1AT that were specifically useful against worm-related proteases instead of the body’s own. In the absence of normal A1AT, the immune system’s own proteases are free to damage tissue, including in the lungs and liver. At the time, the benefits of this genetic mutation outweighed the risks. Not so today.
Today, this deficiency of normal A1AT is the only known genetic risk factor for lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. People also live longer and smoke tobacco, which allows the damage caused by the deficiency to accumulate. “It is only in the last century that modern medicine has allowed human populations to be treated for disease-causing worms,” says Richard J. Pleass of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. “Consequently, these deviant forms of A1AT that once protected people from parasites are now at liberty to cause emphysema and COPD.”
Oh yes, this is exactly what I have been looking for.

Can't we let this guy run things for a while?
Manu Prakesh

He seems quite clever and sane.

The More You Know

What's Medicaid Called in YOUR State?
Medicaid itself operate under more than 100 different names (some states have several separate or overlapping Medicaid programs), but that when you include CHIP and "other" state-funded healthcare programs the total number swells to over 200.

Going back to my main point: Of the 106 different Medicaid programs, only 15 of them (from just 12 states) have the word "Medicaid" in their actual publicly-branded name.

Verbal Vomit Remix

All talk and No action is the Republican plan for Health Care.

I spent the first week of this year in a septic crisis and was suicidal for two days.

But the little bits of news I have gleaned lately makes me more and more glad I am not spending any time on the internet or TV.

The latter is much worse than the former.  It's unbearable insanity.

I'm going back to my paint and plaster.  Peace.

Fun with Medical History

The medical history of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) has been pieced together from his letters and from anecdotes, but his dental health is one aspect which has been somewhat overlooked. It is known that, from an early age, he suffered from toothache and tooth abscesses, problems that may even have had other medical repercussions.

(A different) analysis is consistent with Mozart's last illness and death being due to a streptococcal infection leading to an acute nephritic syndrome caused by poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Correlation Games

Study reveals what happens when depression, anxiety coincide with minor injury
Their work, published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies, revealed that someone who arrives in the emergency department needing help for a minor injury and who also expresses symptoms of depression and anxiety at that time will likely experience poorer work performance and increased health-related time in bed 12 months out.

Risk of long-term disability in older adults who visit the ED

Older adults who go to the emergency department (ED) for an illness or injury are at increased risk for disability and decline in physical abilities up to six months later, according to a study by Yale researchers.

So, you think maybe Hospitals cause long term disability?

Maybe by addressing acute problems and never even acknowledging existing chronic illnesses?

Plausible Deniability is the Refuge of Sociopaths

House Republicans voted 119-74 Monday night in favor of a proposal that would gut Congress' outside ethics watchdog and remove its independence.
If you aren't terrified, you're not paying attention.

Update:  well it seems quite a few people are paying attention.
Inside the House GOP ethics debacle
Good Work, America.

Peripherally administered orexin improves survival of mice with endotoxin shock.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response to infection, accounting for the most common cause of death in intensive care units. Here, we report that peripheral administration of the hypothalamic neuropeptide orexin improves the survival of mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced endotoxin shock, a well-studied septic shock model. The effect is accompanied by a suppression of excessive cytokine production and an increase of catecholamines and corticosterone. We found that peripherally administered orexin penetrates the blood-brain barrier under endotoxin shock, and that central administration of orexin also suppresses the cytokine production and improves the survival, indicating orexin's direct action in the central nervous system (CNS). Orexin helps restore body temperature and potentiates cardiovascular function in LPS-injected mice. Pleiotropic modulation of inflammatory response by orexin through the CNS may constitute a novel therapeutic approach for septic shock.
