The longer the virus stays wild in the population, the more chances it has to replicate in different hosts, and the longer it goes on- THE MORE CHANCES IT HAS TO MUTATE INTO SOMETHING EVEN MORE DEADLY.
It's flat out a matter of percentages- more copies = more mistakes.
